Dryden Farm, Selkirk,Scottish Borders
A huge amount of planning over nearly a year took place before any physical work could start at Dryden Farm, which sits on either side of the A7 trunk road. Various shelter belts required felling and many were over mature with wind damage starting.
Access was difficult into some of the sites, with double handling of timber required to a timber stacking area accessible to lorries. Consultation with BEAR Scotland who manage the A7 was required along with Scottish Power, and also neighbouring land owners to ensure the work went smoothly.
Traffic lights were required over 7 nights from 7pm - 6am to allow roadside felling to take place. A digger was on site throughout the work to enable steeper bits of ground to be accessed and to reinstate areas of field that were crossed by timber extraction machinery.
Where brash could not be moved for practical reasons, it was either heaped up into burn piles, or rowed up. The only area of the site accessible to lorries and chippers was extracted by our own machinery to leave the site clear for replanting. The work took just under two months to complete including timber haulage. All restocking was completed over winter 2021/2022.
